TV shows for time travel – The 1940s

There are obviously many films which could take you back in time to the actual era itself, but how about some fun modern shows taking place in your era of choice?

Every few weeks, we’ll bring you a guide to shows to watch per decade. The first of this series of posts will be dedicated to the 1940s.

Most of these shows somehow involve WWII (how could you ignore such a catestrophic event when making a show?).  So please keep this in mind with regard to shows focusing on this era.

Now, enter your time travel machine and turn the dial to 1940 !

The Time in Between (Original title: El tiempo entre costuras)

A Spanish period drama set in the late 1930s – early 1940s, The Time in Between is an adaptation of the same-titled novel by María Dueñas, published in English under the titles The Time in Between and The Seamstress. The story revolves a seemingly ordinary woman who uses her talent and courage to transform herself first into a prestigious couturier and later into an undercover agent for the Allies during World War II.

Find it on Netflix! And don’t worry, it’s subtitled. 😉

Watch the following trailer to see what it’s about. Warning: This trailer contains what may possibly be a few spoilers, so do not watch it entirely if you prefer surprises.

Michi’s review: This show takes place in both Spain and Morocco, and features gorgeous landscapes. A must watch for amazing vintage ’40s fashion, historic buildings, and beautiful locales!

Land Girls

A story revolving around the lives, loves, and struggles of four members of the Women’s Land Army who are working at the Hoxley Estate during World War II.

Michi’s review:  I haven’t seen this yet, but I will soon!

Bomb Girls

A drama about World War II women at work in a munitions factory. Available on Netflix.

Michi’s review:  I haven’t seen this yet, but I will soon!

Band of Brothers

Michi’s review:  A very well made show. It’s rather different from our other suggestions with its focus on the male experience during the war, but still technically a good ’40s inspired viewing!

Foyle’s War

As WW2 rages around the world, DCS Foyle fights his own war on the home-front as he investigates crimes on the south coast of England. The latter part of the series sees the retired detective working as an MI5 agent operating in the aftermath of the war.

This show is available on Netflix.

Michi’s review: Haven’t yet seen this.

The 1940s House

Unlike the rest of the list, this is actually a history-inspired BBC reality show! Featured in this show are a couple and their daughter and two grandchildren. They volunteer to spend several weeks living under wartime conditions which results in learning to live with rationing and labor intensive methods of household upkeep.

No trailer is available for this show (here is a link to it’s IMDb) and it’s hard to find a place to view this but it’s highly suggested should you know someone with the DVD.

Michi’s review: This show was a bit short, but was definitely a fun watch !

Island at War

A quiet channel island community is thrown into turmoil by the invasion forces of Nazi Germany. Trailer not available, but here is their IMDb page. This show is available on Amazon.

Michi’s review: Haven’t yet seen this.
